Humans, throughout Earth’s history, have made positive and negative impacts to different ecosystems throughout the world. As an ecologist, your job is to study the possible impact humans create when making changes to an ecosystem. The biomes, and smaller ecosystems, that you will be learning about are called Terrestrial Biomes, or, biomes located on land.
Your group will be assigned one of the following biomes:
1. Tundra
2. Taiga
3. Tropical Rain Forest
4. Desert
5. Grasslands/Savannahs
6. Deciduous/Temperate Forest
A real estate developer has just purchased large parcels of land in the ecosystem you are studying. The developer plans to build new homes, factories, and shopping centers. The ecosystems in this biome contain hundreds of organisms that have lived untouched by humans for centuries. Your task, as an ecologist, is to determine the effect land development will have on this terrestrial (land-based) ecosystem. You will study the climate, geography, and the organisms that are commonly found in this biome. Your team will determine the flow of energy among organisms living in this biome. Once the team has collected information about the biome, your team will determine if building would have a positive or negative effect on the biome and/or ecosystem.
